The shinnyo-do temple in automn and winter

Located at one minute walk from the Shinnyo house, the Shinnyo-dō temple (真如堂), formally known as Shinsho Gokuraku-ji, is a historic Buddhist temple in Kyoto affiliated with the Tendai sect. Founded in 984 by a revered monk named Jien, the temple is dedicated to the worship of Amida Buddha, symbolizing infinite compassion. Tucked away in the northern Higashiyama district, Shinnyo-dō is often less crowded than other major temples, offering visitors a tranquil and contemplative atmosphere.

The temple is particularly renowned for its stunning autumn foliage. Every year, from mid-November to early December, Shinnyo-dō's expansive grounds are transformed into a vibrant sea of red, orange, and yellow hues, attracting visitors who seek to enjoy Kyoto's renowned seasonal beauty. The contrast between the richly colored leaves and the temple’s traditional wooden architecture creates an enchanting and picturesque scene.

While Shinnyo-dō remains a hidden gem, it is highly regarded among locals and autumn enthusiasts for its serene ambiance and breathtaking views, making it one of Kyoto's best-kept secrets for enjoying the beauty of the fall season.
